Examining 6 Viral Celebrity Vogue Skincare Secrets

We can’t help but be captivated by celebrities, their red carpet looks, and seemingly ageless skin. It is really no wonder why so many of us fall for every other skincare trend when our favorite celebrity endorses it.

In this article, we’ll explore 6 celebrity skincare secrets as seen on Vogue. Can they give you that red carpet glow? Or are they all smoke and mirrors? Let’s find out.

#1 The Big Silver Ice Globes From Niall Horan

The Big Silver Ice Globes From Niall Horan
Vogue’s YouTube channel

Hack description

Niall rubs frozen globes on his face for a de-puffing effect. He describes them as the biggest and best thing he’s found for his skincare routine.

Scientific evidence

What Niall is using are ice globes, or cryo globes, a new skincare tool filled with anti-freeze liquid. It provides a cooling effect when used to massage the face.

Many people who use ice globes rave about their ability to de-puff the face, reduce the appearance of pores, and slow down the effects of aging.

The cooling effect of ice globes may momentarily make the skin appear tighter and reduce puffiness. Cryotherapy itself has been shown to reduce facial swelling.1

Studies have also shown that using ice rollers before any active skincare product increases absorption.2

The big silver ice globes or ice rollers are a must-have in everybody’s skincare routine. Their effects are not based on the material but on temperature. It is important to keep them cold enough to have benefits and no side effects.

The main benefits of ice rollers are the constriction of blood vessels and tightening of the pores. These can lead to the refreshing and tightening of the skin, may reduce recurrent puffiness, and result in a smoother overall appearance.

On the other hand, if the rolling is done too strongly or for too long, undesired effects such as redness, inflammation, and irritation may occur.

“This is a hack that I invite you to try for special occasions when you want to show perfect makeup, like during a special photo shoot or an important event. If this hack is performed every day, make sure to do it for a short time in the areas where you want better absorption,” adds Dr. Barrios.

If you do not have an ice roller, the expert suggests taking a metal/silver spoon and freezing it or submerging it in a bowl with ice before use.

#2 Putting Honey on the Face From Padma Lakshmi

Putting Honey on the Face From Padma Lakshmi
Vogue’s YouTube channel

Hack description

Top chef Padma Lakshmi puts raw honey on her face and massages it a bit. Then, she leaves it on for a couple of minutes and washes the honey off. Padma claims it helps her skin due to its anti-inflammatory and smoothing properties.

Scientific evidence

Padma Lakshmi is right. Honey is a healing agent and a powerful humectant.3 When applied to the skin, honey locks in moisture and keeps your skin hydrated, leaving it feeling supple and looking dewy.

Honey’s antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties make it a great choice for those suffering from acne by going to the root of the problem and helping reduce the bacteria that cause acne in the first place.4

A word of caution: Honey is generally safe for most skin types, but it’s always a good idea to do a patch test first, especially if you have sensitive skin.

Honey masks have been used by different cultures for many years, not only for beauty purposes but for wound healing as well. This hack is valuable if you have acne or comedone-prone skin, rosacea, psoriasis, and/or eczema.

Dr. Barrios adds that raw honey is rich in enzymes and antioxidants. Its low pH levels are the main reason how and why it acts as a natural humectant.

In simple words, honey has the ability to attract and retain moisture, has anti-inflammatory properties that help calm and soothe irritated skin, supports the natural healing process, protects the skin barrier, and its particles make it a gentle exfoliator.

“Ensure the source of the honey (raw without additives) to get more benefits. I recommend using this mask no more than 3 times per week. To apply it immediately after cleaning the skin, leave it for at least 20 minutes, wash it off, and continue with a regular skincare routine,” says the expert.

#3 Exfoliating Cloth From Julianne Moore

Exfoliating Cloth From Julianne Moore
Vogue’s YouTube channel

Hack description

Julianne uses a washcloth made of cotton and washi – a traditional Japanese paper. She claims it exfoliates her face while absorbing excess oil and impurities.

Scientific evidence

Exfoliating helps you remove dead skin cells from your face, leaving the skin soft and smooth.5

However, Julianne uses a body washcloth to exfoliate her face. Body washcloths are designed with a rougher texture, which can be too harsh for the face.

And even though she stresses the importance of being gentle, a body washcloth may disrupt the skin’s natural barrier, making it more susceptible to dryness and redness.

Despite what the current trends may try to tell you, exfoliating is not an essential step in your skincare routine.6 Nevertheless, if you want to try exfoliating for yourself, opt for exfoliators designed for the face.

Expert opinion

The use of exfoliating cloth is a complete “no” in skincare because it can be too abrasive and may cause redness, irritation, and damage.

Although the scrub towel used by Moore is specially made of soft materials such as cotton and washi and is impregnated with antibacterial herbs to reduce the likelihood of bacterial growth in the towel, Dr. Barrios would consider this towel sufficient for weekly exfoliation if desired or needed.

She further adds: “Regular skin exfoliation is needed to ensure a healthy skin cell turnover, unclog pores, and refine skin texture for a brighter and even skin tone. But, this should be done with caution a maximum of once per week. There are different and safer options besides exfoliating cloth like mild peelings, facial scrubs, and exfoliating brushes.”

#4 Washing Your Face With a Brush From Madelyn Cline

Washing Your Face With a Brush From Madelyn Cline
Vogue’s YouTube channel

Hack description

Following a viral TikTok trend, Madelyn uses a makeup brush for a deeper and more effective cleanse of her face.

Scientific evidence

Using a makeup brush to wash your face can potentially provide a deep cleanse and gentle exfoliation, leaving you with smoother skin.

Like every other TikTok trend, however, it doesn’t have scientific evidence to back up its claims. The supposed benefits are largely based on personal experiences and subjective observations.

After all, makeup brushes are not designed for cleansing and may not be effective enough to remove long-lasting makeup and sunscreen.

If you don’t clean your brush after every cleanse, it can become a breeding ground for bacteria, which can lead to breakouts.7

The use of a soft brush for applying a cleanser is a good way to ensure a clean approach to the skin. Keep it clean and dry to avoid skin contamination.

Dr. Barrios says there is no difference between applying your cleanser with your fingertips and with a brush. If you have long nails, it is likely that you have some bacteria underneath, so using the soft brush as an applicator can be helpful and cleaner.

“At the same time, when using the soft brush, the skin blood circulation is activated and might stimulate lymphatic drainage. It is a good hack to prepare your skin to receive any active ingredient that you would like to apply to clean skin,” she explains.

#5 Keep Your Skin Moist After Washing From Conan Gray

Keep Your Skin Moist After Washing From Conan Gray
Vogue’s YouTube channel

Hack description

After washing his face, Conan Gray dabs it with a towel, leaving some of the moisture on his face.

Scientific evidence

This tip promises that you can keep your skin glowing by leaving it slightly damp after washing your face.

And it’s true – damp skin is better at absorbing skincare ingredients.8 Moisturizing a damp face can help your skin lock in moisture, which can boost hydration levels and promote a plump, dewy complexion.

Keep in mind, however, that you should never apply intensive treatments, such as retinol and active serums, to damp skin. They may penetrate your skin too deeply, causing irritation.

Expert opinion

Leaving your skin wet after washing might feel refreshing, but this habit may cause the opposite effect in the long run. Constant exposure to water can disrupt the skin’s outermost layer (stratum corneum) and protective barrier, leading to possible moisture loss and, eventually, irritation and dryness.

On the other hand, patting the skin until it is slightly damp can help lock in moisture if a moisturizer is applied at this stage. This hack is valuable to ensure better skin hydration and product absorption.

Dr. Barrios notes that it’s essential to find a balance. She also recommends using a soft cotton towel and gently patting your skin without rubbing or pulling.

#6 Reviving the Classics: Kendall Jenner’s Avocado Mask Recipe

Reviving the Classics - Kendall Jenner's Avocado Mask Recipe
Vogue’s YouTube channel

Hack description

Kendall Jenner makes her own face mask from avocado, oatmeal, honey, and lavender oil. According to her, it hydrates and glows her skin.

Scientific evidence

Avocado is rich in vitamin E, hydrating the skin and locking in moisture. It also contains healthy fats, vitamin C, polyphenols, and carotenoids.9

Oatmeal can alleviate dry skin and sunburns, and we’ve already covered the many benefits of honey.10, 11

Lavender oil can promote cell regeneration for skin healing and minimize the appearance of scar tissues.12 On the other hand, it can cause irritation and may lead to contact dermatitis, especially for people who already have sensitive skin.13

DIY can make skincare more affordable and “natural.” However, remember to stay vigilant and do your research before applying anything to your face, despite what celebrities might claim.

Expert opinion

I’d like to call this avocado mask a “Blissful Botanical Elixir.” The combination of this mask is perfect for all skin types. I suggest doing it weekly if you have dry skin and once every 2 weeks if you have a more oily skin type.

The expert adds that the regular topical application of avocado can bring your skin hydration and elasticity. It also protects the skin from free radicals and environmental damage and supports collagen synthesis for more firm and less wrinkly skin.

Oatmeal has anti-inflammatory properties, making it perfect for calming and soothing sensitive or irritated skin, as well as relieving eczema and rashes. It also forms a protective barrier that locks in moisture, supporting the moisturizing properties of avocado.

Dr. Barrios is sure that honey (especially raw honey) is ideal for acne-prone skin and reducing breakouts. Also, it contains enzymes that support the oatmeal saponins providing a gentle exfoliating effect.

According to the expert, the lavender oil of this blissful elixir has extraordinary antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties. The ingredients for the mask must be clean and from a known source to have better benefits.

Conclusion

With the rise of social media, everyone has become a beauty guru, eager to share tips and tricks to make their makeup last longer or improve the effectiveness of their favorite cleanser.

Trying new beauty routines can be fun, and borrowing celebrity tips (especially working ones) can be beneficial for your skin.

However, maintaining a consistent skincare routine with proven products and techniques might give you better results than following fleeting skincare trends.

What people share on social media, whether they’re celebrities or your next-door neighbor, should always be taken with a grain of salt – what may work for them may not work for you.
