Thinking of trying out Metamucil fiber supplements and wondering how well they work? We handled that for you.

Metamucil Review

How do we vet brands and products? Learn more.

When it comes to fiber supplements, you want to know exactly what you’re taking. You want to make sure that it has enough fiber content to improve your digestive health and make you feel better.

Metamucil is one of the most popular fiber supplement brands available in the market that offers a wide range of products. I heard and read a lot of positive things about this brand, so I decided to give it a try.

In this detailed Metamucil review, I’ll examine and try out one of their most popular fiber supplements for myself. I’ll explain what products the brand offers, how they work, and what ingredients they contain.

As mentioned already, Metamucil is a popular brand that’s known to offer some of the best fiber supplements in the market. While it has a wide range of fiber supplement products, it’s most famous for its powdered supplements.

Some of the major claims that I read about these products include:

  • Improved gut health
  • Colon cleanser (removal of waste from the body)
  • Regulated blood sugar levels
  • Enhanced heart health by lowering cholesterol
  • Suppressed appetite

I got really excited after reading this and decided to examine one of the most popular Metamucil supplements, called 4-in-1 Psyllium Fiber Powder. So, I’ll mainly focus on this product in this review.

I had no plans to drink this supplement for a long time since I prefer to get my fiber from food. My primary intent was to analyze its ingredients so that I could determine whether or not it actually offers the benefits the company claims.

Metamucil Fiber
Health Reporter image

I bought 4-in-1 Psyllium Fiber Powder from the nearest Walmart. It was a cylindrical plastic bottle containing coarse, beige-colored powder.

I mixed it in the water as per the guidelines (1 rounded teaspoon in 8 ounces of water) and tried it immediately. It had a refreshing smell and a sweet orange flavor, which, I must say, I enjoyed. However, it was a little bit too sweet compared to other popular fiber supplements.

An important point that I want to mention here is that some people use this product to lose weight. However, there’s no science-based evidence to suggest that it’s the right choice for weight loss.

So if you’re trying to shed some pounds, you would want to use fiber supplements that are specially designed for this purpose.

Important note: Metamucil products aren’t designed to diagnose and/or treat any medical condition. So, if you’re suffering from any medical issue, consider consulting with your professional healthcare provider.

How Long Does It Take for Metamucil to Work?

Every person is unique and has different medical issues. So, the time it takes Metamucil to work can vary from person to person. Generally, if you’re suffering from constipation, you can take this powder twice a day, and you can start experiencing positive results within 12 to 72 hours.

Another feature of this product that I really liked is that it can be taken as a dietary supplement. And according to the company’s official website, it can take a few weeks and a gradual build-up of supplements to experience the benefits.

Pro tip: You can start by taking Metamucil once a day (one rounded teaspoon in 8 ounces of water) and increase the frequency as your body responds.

Is Metamucil a Weight Loss Supplement?

Some people believe that Metamucil is a weight loss supplement because the official website says that it offers benefits for those trying to lose weight. But the fact is that the 4-in-1 Psyllium Fiber Powder isn’t designed for weight loss.

In my opinion, the information on the website is correct, and people interpret it wrongly. That’s because medical research suggests that there are ways fiber can contribute to weight loss.

It’s especially true for soluble fiber, as it’s thought to reduce your appetite, causing you to eat less. This can be useful if you’re trying to eat at a calorie deficit and reduce your caloric intake.

It can also ensure your digestive system is working optimally, making sure your body can get all of the nutrients it needs from the food you eat.

While fiber is part of a balanced diet, there is some research to suggest that psyllium fiber (the kind found in Metamucil supplements) is not an effective tool for weight loss.

Metamucil Product Range

Other than powdered fiber supplements, Metamucil offers a wide range of fiber products, including the following:

Gummies

  • Fiber Gummies for Adults
  • Fiber Gummies for Kids
  • Fiber Plus Vitamins Gummies
  • Coated Fiber Gummies

Capsules

  • Fiber Capsules
  • Fiber Plus Vitamins Capsules

Thins

  • Cinnamon Spice Fiber Thins
  • Apple Crisp Fiber Thins
  • Chocolate Fiber Thins

As you can see, Metamucil offers many products, and they’re available in different types and flavors. It helps you choose the one that suits your taste and preferences the best.

Key Ingredients of Metamucil

Before I buy anything that I’ll be consuming, I always take a close look at all the ingredients that it contains. And I recommend you do the same because what we eat affects our health directly.

Here’s what Metamucil fiber supplements contain.

Metamucil Supplement Facts
Health Reporter image

#1 Psyllium husk

Psyllium husk is the primary source of fiber within these supplements. It’s a well-known form of fiber that comes from the seeds of the Plantago ovata.

Psyllium husk has been used in herbal medicine for centuries to treat constipation, promote regularity, and improve overall digestive health.

#2 Maltodextrin

Maltodextrin is a powder that’s usually made from corn, rice, potato starch, or wheat. It is considered a safe food additive by the US FDA (Food and Drug Administration) and is usually used as a thickener or filler in food products.

#3 Citric acid

Found naturally in citrus fruits, citric acid is what gives citrus fruits their acidic taste. However, it’s generally a manufactured form of this acid that is found in supplements.

It’s typically used in supplements to stabilize the active ingredient and sometimes helps the body absorb them better.

There is some evidence that adverse effects may be experienced from the manufactured form of citric acid, but further study is required to confirm this.

#4 Aspartame

Aspartame is an artificial sweetener that is used to replace sugar in sugar-free products and supplements. It is 200 times sweeter than sugar.

There is much controversy as to the use of aspartame in products. While the sweetener is approved for use by many health authorities, some research has linked it with negative side effects like headaches, seizures, depression, weight gain, and dizziness.

Still, more research is needed to prove these side effects.

#5 Natural and artificial flavors

Both natural and artificial flavors are used to enhance the flavor of a product. Natural flavors come from natural sources, whereas artificial flavors are manufactured synthetically.

There is some evidence to suggest that artificial flavors can have negative effects on humans, including a worsening of asthmatic symptoms and stomach pains, but more research may be needed to prove this.

A Word From Our MD

Taking a fiber supplement can be helpful if you do not get enough fiber from your diet. It’s also useful for your body if you suffer from a condition like irritable bowel syndrome, which can cause digestive issues and loose stool.

Fiber is an important part of proper nutrition because it keeps the gut and stomach in good health and can also lower cholesterol and manage blood glucose levels.

Eating more fiber can also promote weight loss as it suppresses your appetite and can improve heart health and overall health.

If you’re suffering from constipation, you can also take fiber supplements, as they can encourage bowel movement and remove waste from your body to make you feel lighter.

Benefits of Metamucil

Now, I’ll explain all the benefits that Metamucil 4-in-1 Psyllium Fiber Powder can bring to the table.

#1 Improved gut health

Metamucil is known to improve bowel movements and minimize the symptoms of constipation. That’s because of the psyllium husk, which is widely used to treat constipation by regulating gut microbiota. It can also help you get rid of diarrhea and improve your overall gut health.

#2 Gentle colon cleansing

Just like colon cleansing supplements, 4-in-1 Psyllium Fiber Powder can help your body with toxin elimination. It adds bulk to the stool and improves your bowel movements, which traps and removes waste from your body.

#3 Blood sugar regulation

Fiber in Metamucil can slow down the process of absorbing fat and sugar from food, which can prevent spikes in your blood sugar levels. This can be particularly beneficial for individuals with diabetes who want to manage their blood sugar levels.

#4 Heart health support

Metamucil can also promote your heart health by lowering your cholesterol levels. That’s because it has soluble fiber that minimizes cholesterol absorption in your bloodstream, which can maintain a healthy cardiovascular system.

This isn’t something that I can attest to, but the high levels of soluble fiber in Metamucil (2.4 grams in one adult dose) can actually be beneficial for your heart health.

#5 Appetite management

If you’re struggling to manage your diet, then Metamucil can help. The high fiber content in this supplement can help you feel satiated for a longer period of time.

Not only can it help you eat less, but it can also support you to achieve your weight loss goals (of course,  indirectly: only if you control your diet successfully).

#6 Optimal nutrient absorption

Metamucil’s fiber supplements support digestive health by promoting regular bowel movements and ensuring efficient nutrient absorption from the food you consume.

It can help your body obtain the essential vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients it needs to perform essential bodily functions.

#7 Overall well-being

Poor digestive health can lead to a wide range of health problems, including constipation, obesity, poor immune system, and even cancer in the worst cases.

As the Metamucil supplements improve your gut health, it helps you prevent the risk of falling victim to these diseases, supporting your overall health.

Cons and Side Effects of Metamucil

Metamucil may come with some side effects, especially for new users, and I consider it my responsibility to explain them properly.

#1 Initial bowel changes

As you start taking Metamucil supplements, the fiber content in your body will increase, and you might start experiencing increased bloating. It happens because your body needs some time to adjust to the extra fiber intake. However, this problem should resolve within a few days.

#2 Allergic reaction

In very rare instances, some dietary supplements may cause allergic reactions. Symptoms of an allergic reaction can range from mild, including a rash, itchy eyes, and sneezing, to severe, including difficulty breathing, loss of consciousness, and confusion.

If you experience any kind of allergic reaction, stop taking the supplement immediately. Additionally, you should also stop taking this supplement if constipation lasts for more than a week or if you experience rectal bleeding.

In any of these cases, visit your medical health provider as soon as possible to treat them.

#3 Additives and sweeteners

Metamucil fiber supplements contain additives and artificial sweeteners, like aspartame and citric acid, in manufactured form. While these ingredients are generally considered safe for most people, some individuals can experience side effects like digestive discomfort and headaches.

What Do Online Reviews Say About Metamucil?

Reading online reviews about a new product that you’re planning to try is important. It allows you to find out what other people think about the product and determine what to expect.

Here’s what I found about Metamucil.

What Do Online Reviews Say About Metamucil

I am glad that Cathy found a way to get rid of diarrhea. If you have the same problem, you can use the same dosage that Cathy did after consulting your doctor.

What Do Online Reviews Say About Metamucil

Kitty is another happy and satisfied user who uses Metamucil just as a fiber source. But she’s right in doing so because most of us don’t consume the recommended daily dosage of fiber in our diet.

What Do Online Reviews Say About Metamucil

I have to say that I agree with Rissa. Because of artificial sweeteners, the Metamucil 4-in-1 Psyllium Fiber Powder supplement feels a bit too sweet.

Although it doesn’t exceed the daily recommended sugar intake (which is 25–36 grams), even if you consume it thrice a day, it’s still more than other fiber supplements.

How Much Does Metamucil Cost?

The price of the Metamucil range varies depending upon the retailer you purchase it from. The brand is stocked by many stores, including CVS, Walmart, and even Amazon, and each retailer prices the supplements as they wish.

Prices appear to range from $15.00 up to $30.00 depending on the store and the product you wish to purchase.

How I Tested

I follow a systematic approach to evaluate the quality, effectiveness, price, and brand reputation of a product that I use.

Quality 7/10

To assess the quality of Metamucil, I considered various aspects, including the ingredients used, manufacturing standards, packaging, and changes in my body.

I can confidently say that Metamucil offers high-quality products that meet our quality testing standards.

The only reason this product secures 8 out of 10 is the fact that it contains additives and artificial sweeteners.

Effectiveness 9/10

Metamucil 4-in-1 Psyllium Fiber Powder works effectively because it’s high in soluble fiber. It contains psyllium husk is a well-known form of fiber and can increase your daily fiber intake.

According to science, it can improve your digestive system, remove waste from the body, and increase overall health.

So, I gave it 9/10 in effectiveness as well.

Price 9/10

The Metamucil fiber products are relatively cheap, making them affordable for anyone looking to supplement their fiber intake. However, the prices of these products vary across the different platforms, which can be a bit confusing for the users.

So, I think 9/10 is justified in this department.

Brand reputation 8/10

I believe that I should only recommend products from brands that I know use safe ingredients and work to the best advantage of their customers.
