Is Yucca (Cassava) Keto-Friendly?

Unfortunately, yucca is not keto-friendly as it is too high in net carbs and might kick you out of ketosis even in small serving sizes.

Not Keto

  • A keto diet is ideally low in carbs. However, it would help if you avoided yucca on keto as it is too high in net carbs (38.1g per 100g serving), and it will kick you out of ketosis.
  • To maintain ketosis, it is essential to limit your daily carb consumption from 20g to 30g.
  • It would be best to replace yucca with other keto-friendly alternatives such as olives, alfalfa sprouts, and endive.

Low in Fats

  • A keto diet is high in fats and low in carbs. During ketosis, your body burns fat for fuel. The macronutrient ratio for a keto diet is 5–10% carbs, 20–25% protein, and 70% fats.
  • However, cassava is the opposite of what you require on a keto diet as it is high in carbs and low in fat.
  • Your body needs to burn clean fuel on ketosis, and the majority of your foods need to be high in fat and low in carbs.
  • It would be best to try out other low-carb, high-fat alternatives such as avocado, ghee, and salmon.

Natural but Too High in Carbs

  • Cassava is minimally processed and free of harmful non-keto additives like artificial sweeteners, highly refined oils, and additives.
  • Cassava is also rich in vitamin C, an antioxidant that enhances immunity and protects against skin damage. It also contains some resistant starch, which passes through the gut undigested, thus improving gut health.
  • Despite all these numerous health benefits, yucca is not suitable for you on keto due to its high carb count. It is necessary to track the macros and ingredients in your foods to maintain ketosis.
