Is Watermelon Keto?

Watermelon is not a keto food. While watermelon packs heart-health benefits, it is naturally high in net carbs. Therefore, you should avoid watermelon when following the keto diet or consume it very moderately.

Not Keto-Friendly

  • Watermelon is not a keto-friendly food as it is both high in carbs and low in fats. The keto diet requires you to cut back on carbs and ramp up your fat intake.
  • Unfortunately, the macros of watermelon do not meet the basic keto requirements.
  • For keto success, you need to take 70–80% of your daily calorie intake from healthy fats
  • There are other fruits you can enjoy on the keto diet. For example, avocados are the perfect keto fruit containing healthy unsaturated fats.
  • Watermelon also contains sugar which can spike blood sugar and prevent ketosis.

Natural but Too High in Carbs

  • Watermelon is high in carbs. A 100g serving of watermelon contains 7.15g of net carbs.
  • The keto diet places restrictions on your carbohydrate intake. As you can only consume under 50 grams of carbs per day, too much watermelon can kick you out of ketosis.
  • Opt for more low-carb fruits, like blackberries, raspberries, and strawberries.
