Are Tomatoes Keto?

Raw tomatoes are keto-friendly and fuel our bodies with essential phytonutrients. They are low in net carbs and free of artificial and harmful ingredients.

Keto-Friendly

  • In a keto diet, the goal is to keep carbs at 5–10% of your caloric intake, and one tomato is less than a quarter of that amount.
  • Tomatoes are also low-fat, with only 0.2g per 100g. You can easily add healthy fats while consuming them.
  • For example, mixing olive oil and feta cheese makes for a fresh, low-calorie keto snack. Don’t forget oregano!
  • Tomatoes have 2–3g of net carbs per 100g, around 10 times less than most fruit. 

Low-Fat Fruit

  • Even though tomatoes are keto-friendly, you should be cautious about tomato products such as tomato juice, paste, sauce, or salsa. They might have added sweeteners and artificial ingredients that are not keto-friendly.
  • Sundried tomatoes also have more added sugars than raw tomatoes.
  • Tomatoes fit perfectly in your keto diet because they don’t add many calories but count to the volume of the food you consume, helping you feel satiated for longer.
  • In addition, tomatoes have fiber, which aids digestion, prevents constipation, and helps regulate cholesterol levels. 

Natural and Whole Food

  • Despite being low in calories, tomatoes are packed with nutritional perks.
  • They are full of vitamins and antioxidants like vitamin A, C, and K, as well as potassium, magnesium, and chlorogenic acid.
  • Researchers found that lycopene contained in tomatoes may decrease cancer or cardiovascular disease risk.
  • Tomatoes protect your cells from free radical damage, keeping the eyes, skin, heart, and brain healthy and boosting the immune system.
