Is Tahini Keto-Friendly?

Tahini is not keto-friendly. This food has a high net carbohydrate content and could kick your body out of ketosis if you accidentally over-consume it. You could try an organic nut butter with a low net carb count or find a low-carb tahini product as an alternative option.

Not Keto-Friendly

  • Tahini is a type of paste made from ground sesame seeds. It is a popular condiment, but unfortunately, it is not a good match for the ketogenic diet.
  • The ketogenic diet prioritizes low-carb foods to keep your glucose stores low. This allows your body to make the switch from burning glucose to burning fat for fuel in a process called ketosis.
  • The sooner you get into ketosis, the sooner you start losing weight.
  • Once your body starts burning fat, you can expect to lose weight fairly quickly.

High in Carbs

  • Tahini has 21.2g of total carbs and 11.9g of net carbs.
  • Most keto dieters consume between 20–30g of net carbs per day. A 100g serving will use up most of your daily carb allowance.
  • If you overeat tahini, you risk pushing your body out of ketosis.
  • When you break ketosis, your body returns to burning carbs for fuel.

High in Fats

  • It’s unfortunate that tahini has so many net carbs because it is a great source of fats.
  • A 100g serving of tahini has 53.8g of fat. Due to the carb content, your body cannot use these fats for energy because ketosis only occurs when you restrict carbs.
  • The perfect keto diet features foods high in fats and low in carbs.

There are lots of good fats for keto you can enjoy that won’t end ketosis.
