Is Sushi Rice Keto-Friendly?

Sushi rice is not keto-friendly because it has a high carbohydrate content. It contains very little fat and protein, so it won’t benefit your body during the fat-burning process. Most grains are not suitable for keto dieters, and most people exclude them entirely.

Not Keto-Friendly

  • Sushi rice is sticky, short-grain white rice flavored with vinegar and seasoning. 
  • Sushi rice is a no-go for keto dieters. The nutrition content does not match the requirements of the ketogenic diet because it is high in carbs and low in fats. It is also low in fiber and protein, so there is little to gain from consuming sushi rice. 

High in Carbs

  • Sushi rice has 20g of net carbohydrates per 100g serving. Most people following the ketogenic diet try to keep carbohydrate consumption under 50g per day, with many allowing only 20g. Eating this rice will quickly use up your daily allowance. 
  • Although grains are highly nutritious, almost all are high in carbohydrates. When following keto, you will need to eliminate or significantly limit foods such as barley, brown rice, and rice noodles from your diet due to their carb content. 
  • As an alternative, you can swap your usual whole grains for other nutritious foods that won’t disrupt your diet.

Low in Fats

  • A serving of sushi rice has only 0.19g of fats. Including this food in your keto meal plan will not provide your body with the important benefits of fats. 
  • The diet comprises 70–80% of your daily calories from fat. You need to eat a lot of fats from nutritious sources to fuel your body with energy. 

Natural

  • Rice is a natural grain with various health benefits. However, white rice is highly processed and lacks many essential nutrients. It is not the healthiest option.

You can still eat many other components that traditionally accompany sushi rice. Bluefin tuna, fatty salmon, steak, and fried eggs are all keto-friendly choices.
