Is Spaghetti Keto-Friendly?

No, spaghetti is not keto-friendly and should be avoided on the ketogenic diet. The high number of net carbs will only disrupt the ketosis state. If you want to lose weight on this popular diet, opt for other foods like cabbage noodles or spiralized vegetables.

Not Keto-Friendly

  • There are 29.1 grams of net carbs per 100 grams of spaghetti, making it unsuitable for the ketogenic diet. Eating this food can break ketosis – a metabolic state that encourages your body to burn fat for energy instead of glycogen.
  • You should also be aware that spaghetti can exceed your daily calorie intake. To lose weight on the keto diet, it’s important to monitor what you eat. Aim to consume 400–500 calories less than your maintenance amount each day.

High in Carbs

  • Spaghetti contains too many carbs to be accepted on the keto diet. People usually stay below 30 grams of carbs a day when maintaining ketosis. You could have other low-carb spaghetti alternatives that still make great meals.
  • Some of these might be spiralized veggies like zucchini, shirataki, cucumber, kelp, eggplant, kohlrabi, cabbage, celeriac, cauliflower, and bell pepper. Just put these through a pasta machine or spiralizer to get the spaghetti effect.

Low in Fats

  • There aren’t many fats in a serving of spaghetti. You need to get 70% of fat from your total daily calories to sustain high energy levels. Otherwise, you might suffer from chronic migraines, fatigue, muscle weakness, constipation, and gut cramps.
  • Consider eating high-fat foods like black olives, avocado, cottage cheese, Greek yogurt, herring, salmon, whole eggs, seed butter, and chia seeds. Your body needs this type of energy source to function and burn a few pounds.
