Is Sourdough Bread Keto-Friendly?

No, sourdough bread is not keto-friendly due to the high number of carbs, sugar, and calories. Eating this food can break ketosis and stop you from losing weight. Bread isn’t a suitable option when following the keto diet, so opt for other nutritious foods.

Not Keto-Friendly

  • There are 49.7g of net carbs per 100g of sourdough bread. Eating too many carbs will break ketosis – a metabolic state that burns stubborn fat. To lose some weight, avoid bread and replace it with high-fiber foods.
  • Any food high in sugar and saturated fat also ruins the keto diet, as your body breaks it down into glucose. One rule when following a low-carb meal plan is to limit processed foods as much as possible. That’s why you have to avoid such food as bread, including cornbread.

Low in Fats

  • Sourdough bread doesn’t have enough good fat. Not getting enough unsaturated fat can lead to chronic fatigue, migraines, stomach pain, and muscle cramps since your body doesn’t have enough energy to burn fat and properly function.
  • Foods like avocado, Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, almonds, salmon, seed butter, black olives, coconut, and eggs have the best fat. Since they are also high in protein, your muscles can recover quickly after strength training.
  • You should get unsaturated fat from 70–80% of your total daily calories.

High in Carbs

  • Sourdough bread contains too many carbohydrates. These carbs will turn into glucose and encourage the body to burn glycogen stores instead of fat. Your metabolic state stops producing ketones, leading to slow weight loss.

People aim to consume below 30g of carbs when following the keto diet. All you need to do is eat more vegetables like spinach, turnips, celery, lettuce, asparagus, and broccoli to avoid craving high-carb foods like sourdough bread.
