Is Sour Cream Keto-Friendly?

Yes, sour cream is keto-friendly.

It is a dairy product made of cream and a lactic acid culture. Sour cream gets its thick, cream-like texture from fat.

Full-fat sour cream is made from cream with 18% (or more) milk fat.

It provides 50 calories per 2 tablespoons, 2g of carbs, and 2g of sugar. It’s heavy in fat and low in carbohydrates, making it ideal for the keto diet.

Carbs in Sour Cream

  • Two tablespoons of sour cream contain only 1–3g of carbs. It’s a healthy and natural source of fat that could be easily incorporated into your diet, especially if you are on keto.
  • However, most low-fat and nonfat sour creams are not the best options.
  • For example, fat-free sour cream has a higher amount of carbohydrates than regular and will be too high in carbs.
  • Keto-friendly dairy options would be heavy cream, cream cheese, and cheddar cheese.

Does Sour Cream Have Sugar?

  • Yes, sour cream includes naturally occurring milk sugars (lactose). The amount of grams of sugar in sour cream depends on the brand, but it’s usually no more than 3g per serving (2tbsp).
  • Be aware that if you are lactose intolerant, you must use sour cream in moderation. If you are following a dairy-free diet or eating only plant-based food, sour cream is not the right option for you either.

Low Glycemic Index

  • Most dairy products have a low glycemic index as they raise blood glucose levels slowly, and sour cream is no exception. The glycemic index of regular sour cream is 35, which is considered low.
  • Sour cream is a great condiment so use it without doubt but always check nutrition labels before buying. Opt for organic sour cream if possible.
