Is Ricotta Cheese Keto-Friendly?

Ricotta cheese is not keto-friendly and should be avoided on the keto diet. This is because it contains a good amount of carbs that could break ketosis. Instead, opt for other low-carb cheese options to ensure you’re still in the fat-burning process.

Avoid

  • There are 7.27g of net carbs per 100g of ricotta cheese, making it unsuitable for the ketogenic diet. Consuming too many carbs can throw you out of ketosis – a metabolic state that burns fat for energy instead of glucose.
  • You should avoid eating ricotta cheese when losing weight. Some other great options consist of cheddar cheese, pimento cheese, mozzarella, and blue cheese. These are perfectly safe and contain minimal carbs for the keto diet.

Moderate Amount of Fats

  • Ricotta cheese does contain 10.2g of fats. Getting enough fats prevent headaches, muscle weakness, fatigue, and stomach cramps. However, this doesn’t mean that ricotta is suitable for a low-carb diet.
  • Certain high-fat foods like avocado, olives, salmon, Greek yogurt, and some almonds can give the right amount of energy. Aim to get 70–80% of unsaturated fats from your total daily calories, as this will maintain ketosis.

Moderate Amount of Carbs

  • Since ricotta doesn’t have any dietary fiber, there are more carbohydrates. As you might know already, carbs are not good for the ketogenic diet. You should avoid this product if you want to lose stubborn weight and keep it off.

May Contain Additives

  • Some brands of ricotta cheese contain additives. These chemical substances can maintain the freshness and appearance of the food. Adding unnatural ingredients can make cheese less healthy on a weight-loss diet.
