Is Red Wine Keto?

No, red wine is not keto. This is mainly due to the high amount of carbohydrates it contains per serving. While it is rich in anti-oxidants and other heart-healthy nutrients, red wine is not a great choice if you’re on keto

Not Keto-Friendly

  • Wine and other processed alcoholic drinks, such as beer, contain carbohydrates.
  • If you’re on keto, you have to stay away from any food or drinks that contain carbs so that you can remain in a state of ketosis.
  • Consuming red wine will not stop ketosis. However, it will slow it down. This is because your liver will process the alcohol before it processes body fat.

High in Carbs

  • The recommended daily carbohydrate limit is between 30–50 g per day. Of course, being on keto, it is best to completely avoid consuming carbs.
  • Red wine contains 2.61 g of carbs per 100 g serving. While this may seem below the daily limit, it does pile up with every glass.

Low in Fats

Alcohol

  • So what’s the deal with keto and alcohol? Can you still enjoy a drink while you’re on keto?
  • The answer is yes – as long as you keep it pure. Tequila, rum, vodka, whiskey, and gin are examples of “pure” alcohol – that is, alcohol drinks free of carbohydrates. Want to add more flavor? Use low-carb drink mixers!
  • On the other hand, red wine and light beer contain moderate to high amounts of carbohydrates and should be consumed in moderation.
  • Don’t worry – there are keto-friendly alcoholic drinks out there for you!
