Are Red/Kidney Beans Keto-Friendly?

Red/kidney beans are not keto-friendly. As with other types of legumes, red/kidney beans should be totally avoided on a standard keto diet due to the high carbohydrate content that they have.

Not Keto

  • Red/kidney beans are not considered friendly to the ketogenic diet due to their high carbohydrate content.
  • Many popular legume types are not keto-friendly because all are relatively high in carbohydrates and not compatible with the low-carb, high-fat diet needed to trigger ketosis on the keto diet.

Too High in Carbs

  • Red/kidney beans contain 23.8g of carbohydrate per 100g. On the ketogenic diet, it is advised that you eat no more than 50g of carbs per day.
  • In recipes where red/kidney beans are required, there are few legumes that could be substituted due to the high carb content of all bean products.
  • The most keto-friendly bean you could try is the green bean, though it still has a carb content of 4.11g per 100g and should be eaten in limited quantities on the keto diet.
  • You could also try edamame, which has 8.63g per 100g and can be keto-friendly if eaten in limited quantities.
  • Generally, though, beans are a hard ingredient to replace on the keto diet, and instead of hunting down substitutes, you should avoid recipes where beans are an ingredient.

Natural Product

  • Red/kidney beans are a natural product.
  • This means that they do not have any additives, preservatives, or other synthetic ingredients added to them to alter the flavor, texture, or color of the product.
  • Natural products are good for those following the ketogenic diet as there are no hidden ingredients that lead to you unwittingly eating over your carbohydrate limit for the day.
  • Aim to eat more natural products on your keto diet and see the difference.
