Are Potatoes Keto?

Potatoes are enemies of your keto diet. As tasty as this starchy vegetable is, it isn’t suitable if you’re maintaining a keto lifestyle. Potatoes majorly contain carbs, which in no way helps with your keto diet. So, avoid this starchy food to attain optimum ketosis.

Not Keto-Friendly

  • Even though potatoes have the benefit of not having gluten, they still have 17.5g of carbs per 100g serving.
  • Due to the excessive carbs in the vegetable, we can’t place them in the keto-friendly category.
  • So, if you want to achieve your keto goals, switch to alternatives such as avocado, zucchini, or fish oils.

Too High in Carbs

  • The keto diet aims to attain ketosis.
  • Ketosis features metabolizing fats rather than carbohydrates in the body.
  • Limiting or inhibiting its sugar reserves aids the body in entering this state efficiently.
  • However, if you consume carbohydrates, it shifts back to metabolizing its primary energy source, which is sugar.
  • Consequently, your fat metabolism is hindered, and you come out of the ketosis state.
  • Thus, starchy foods like potatoes are the major hindering items in your goal to achieve ketosis.
  • Shifting towards vegetables with fewer carbohydrates can be an effective way of attaining your keto goals.

Low in Fat

  • In addition to their high carb content, potatoes have a minor quantity of fats.
  • Compared to 17.5g of carbohydrates, potatoes deliver only 0.02g of fats per 100g serving.
  • This doesn’t provide enough nutritional value of fats to maintain ketosis.
