Are Potato Skins Keto-Friendly?

No, potato skins are high-carb snacks that are not suitable for your keto diet. While they have a good amount of fats and nutrients, there are simply too many net carbohydrates for keto. Your efforts will quickly end if potato skins disrupt or end ketosis.

Not Keto-Friendly

  • While the skin of potatoes is loaded with antioxidants and minerals, potato skins are not keto-friendly due to their carbohydrate content.
  • In addition, many store-bought varieties of potato skins are highly-processed and packed with unhealthy ingredients that do not support a healthy body.

Moderate Amount of Fats

  • A good thing about potato skins is that they contain a moderate amount of fats, with a mix of saturated, monounsaturated, and polyunsaturated fats. Plus, they’re often deep-fried in high-fat oil or baked with lashings of olive oil
  • Regardless, the fat content will not support your weight loss journey if the net carbs accidentally end ketosis.
  • With so many keto-friendly fat sources available, you can easily skip the potato skins to succeed in your journey. There’s avocado, whole eggs, fatty fish, full-fat yogurt, and other high-fat dairy products, such as butter and cheese.

High in Carbs

  • You would consume 14.7 grams of net carbohydrates if you were to eat 100 grams worth of potato skins.
  • The keto diet is very low-carb, so the above amount is too high.
  • Potatoes, sweet potatoes, and other starchy foods like bread and rice are generally off-limits on keto because they have too many carbs.
  • Forget potato skins and load up on keto-friendly foods like avocado fries, cauliflower rice, or cauliflower mash.
