Are Plums Keto?
No, plums are not fully keto-friendly and should be consumed in moderation. However, as long as it is fresh fruit, plums can be part of the ketogenic diet even though they are not at the top of the list of allowed fruits.
It is very important to consider the number of carbohydrates since 100g of plums contain 11.4g of carbs.
The idea is to eat only one piece of plums to avoid exceeding the daily carbohydrate requirement of the ketogenic diet, which allows 20–50g per day to prevent breaking ketosis.
Keto if Limited
- Avoid dried or canned plums, both of which contain a large amount of added sugar and, therefore, are not allowed on the ketogenic diet.
- Also, fresh fruit contains a significant amount of carbohydrates, and it would be easy to go over the acceptable requirement for keto, so avoid eating more than one piece.
- Opt for strawberries, lemons, blueberries, tomatoes, and avocados, as they are keto-friendly fruits.
High in Carbs
- A medium 75g plum provides approximately 8.5g of carbohydrates, which means it has enough carbs to set off red flags if you’re following the keto diet, as your intake should be carefully calculated.
- However, it has a low glycemic index, so it does not have a major impact on blood sugar.
Low in Fats
- Practicing the keto diet requires eating foods high in fat and low in carbs. In this case, plums have practically no fat content (0.28g of fat per 100g).
- Instead of plums, eat a few starfruits as they are one of the best fruit for this diet.
