Are Plantains Keto?

Plantains are not a match for the keto diet because they contain too many carbs. Additionally, they have a low-fat content. Eating plantains will quickly kick your body out of ketosis.

Not Keto-Friendly

  • Plantains provide the opposite macros ratio for what the keto diet demands. They are high in carbs and very low in fats. A 100g serving (less than half of one whole plantain) has 34.5g of net carbs.
  • As the carb count is so high, even a small serving of plantain can kick your body out of ketosis.
  • The principle of keto is a low-carb, high-fat, moderate-protein diet.
  • The best keto foods are low in carbs and high in fats. Look for olive oil, coconut oil, nuts, and avocados.

Too Low in Fats

  • Plantains are very low in fats, with less than 0.1g of fat per 100g serving.
  • When practicing the keto diet, fats are essential. Your body needs fats to burn for energy as it no longer has access to glucose from carbs.
  • It is best to choose healthy fats to provide your body with clean fuel. Trans fats (unhealthy fats) are bad for your health and can increase your risk of heart disease and stroke.
  • Opt for alternative fruits that are both low in carbs and rich in good fat.

Natural but Will Kick You Out of Ketosis

  • Plantains are a natural whole food. They are minimally processed and are rich in several vitamins and minerals, including vitamin A, vitamin C, magnesium, and potassium.
  • Unfortunately, they are not a good match for keto because they are high in carbs and low in fats.
  • Olives and avocado are good examples of staple keto food.
