Is Meatloaf Keto-Friendly?

Meatloaf is not keto-friendly meat to consume when on the ketogenic diet. It is high in both carbs and sugar and would knock you out of ketosis, so it is unsuitable for keto dieters to consume.

Not Keto-Friendly

  • Meatloaf is not a keto-friendly meat option. It has 10.1g total carbs per 100g, making it too high in carbs for consumption on the keto diet.
  • The keto diet requires you to eat at a much-reduced carbohydrate rate. This means limiting consumption to around 20–30g per day.
  • Meatloaf also contains sugar. Sugar intake causes a spike in blood glucose, which elicits an insulin response. This insulin response would end the state of ketosis.
  • The metabolic state of ketosis in the body is the fat-burning state. In this state, the body uses stored body fat for fuel rather than blood sugar.
  • It is achieved by eating much fewer carbs than normal, effectively cutting off the fuel source. By consuming sugar, you are feeding the body a much quicker fuel source, ending the fat-burning state.

Low in Fats

  • Meatloaf has a low fat content, with only 7.4g of fat per 100g. On the ketogenic diet, you need to increase your fat intake.
  • While meatloaf is not a good meat product to consume on the keto diet, you could instead try turkey or chicken wings. Both are keto-friendly and have higher fat content than meatloaf.
  • Other sources of healthy fat to supplement with on the keto diet include avocado, olive oil, and some nuts and seeds.

High in Carbs

  • Consumption of carbs needs to be kept to a minimum on the keto diet. Carbohydrates will knock you out of ketosis and stop the fat-burning process.
  • The state of ketosis allows keto dieters to shed excess fat and lose weight quickly on this diet. 
  • It is maintained by reducing carb intake and eating more fats than usual.
