Are Hearts of Palm Keto?
Hearts of palm, or palm hearts, are not keto-friendly. We recommend you don’t eat hearts of palm on a keto diet because the high carbohydrate content may kick you out of ketosis.
Not Keto-Friendly
- Hearts of palm is a highly-nutritious white vegetable. Still, it is not a good match for the keto diet.
- It doesn’t meet the ideal macros requirements of the keto diet, which is high-fat, low-carb. Instead, it is high in carbs and low in fats – the exact opposite.
- It is best to skip hearts of palm from your diet and focus on more keto-friendly vegetables.
Too Many Carbs
- The bottom line is – hearts of palm contain too many carbs and will quickly use up your carb allowance.
- On keto, you must drastically reduce your carb intake to under 50g per day. Doing so forces a metabolic switch that sees your body burn fat for fuel instead of glucose from carbs.
Low in Fats
- Even if you’re new to keto, you’re probably aware that you must consume plenty of fats. During ketosis, your body switches to burning fat as its primary energy source. Without enough fat on keto, you will feel exhausted and hungry. It will also hinder your efforts to facilitate ketosis.
- Hearts of palm have less than half a gram of fat per 100g serving and will not benefit your keto journey.
- Choose low-carb vegetables that you can supplement with healthy fats, such as olive oil and grass-fed butter, to meet your daily fat requirements.
Natural
- Hearts of palm is a whole plant food that comes from the inner core of some palm tree species. It is a good source of calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus, among other nutrients.
Unfortunately, you cannot benefit from hearts of palm on the keto diet because a small serving might end ketosis, extending the time it takes to lose weight on keto.
