Is Couscous Keto?

Couscous is not keto-friendly as it has a very high carb content and will easily kick you out of ketosis. Most foods from grains such as bread and couscous are not good for keto.

Not Keto-Friendly

  • Couscous is not suitable food for a keto diet as it is too high in net carbs and low in fats.
  • Its macronutrient profile makes it hard to maintain ketosis as its carbs per serving are way higher than what’s necessary for an ideal keto diet.
  • Most of the carbohydrate content in couscous is starch, and a single serving of couscous will kick you out of ketosis.
  • It is best to try out other keto-friendly foods such as avocado to maintain ketosis.

High in Net Carbs

  • It is best to avoid couscous on keto as it is a very high-carb food (21.7g per 100g serving).
  • Such a high amount of carbs will exceed the daily allowable amount necessary to maintain ketosis.
  • It is best to try out other low-carb food, such as mushrooms and bluefin tuna.

Low in Healthy Fats

  • Couscous is low in healthy fats, the primary fuel source for the body on a keto diet.
  • Ideally, a keto diet contains at least 70% fats, 20–25% proteins, and carbs account for the rest.
  • It would be best to substitute it with other foods like salmon and avocado, which are rich in healthy fats.

Natural Food but High in Carbs

  • Couscous is a natural food that is a good fiber source that helps improve digestive health.
  • It is also rich in selenium, a powerful antioxidant that helps the body repair damaged cells.
  • Selenium is also crucial for improving thyroid health, and it helps lower cancer risk.
  • The antioxidants in couscous are good for improving immune health as they help fight inflammation and reduce oxidative stress in the body.
  • Despite all these perks, selenium is not suitable for you on keto as it is too high in carbs and will hinder you from reaching ketosis.
