Are Corn Tortillas Keto?

No, corn tortillas are not keto-friendly.

From time to time, you find yourself craving certain snacks that may or may not go against your keto lifestyle. If you are a fan of Mexican food, you may be thinking about having some crispy tortilla chips.

However, corn tortillas come from corn flour, which contains a ton of carbs and very few fats and proteins. The carbs from corn tortillas can quickly pile up, pushing you way above your daily allowance and ultimately out of ketosis.

Not Keto-Friendly

  • Corn tortillas not being keto-friendly boils down to what goes into making them, and, in this case, it’s corn flour. The calories gotten from corn flour are something you would want to limit.
  • Pre-packed flour tortillas also come with several ingredients that are detrimental to your health.
  • Corn tortillas have an unbalanced carb-to-fat ratio, and as such, you begin to gain weight instead of losing it. Carb Balance flour tortillas are also not keto-friendly.

High in Net Carbs

  • With a 100g serving of corn tortillas, you get about 38.3g of net carbs, and when coupled with other food, you quickly exceed your daily carb ratio, and your body jumps out of ketosis.
  • Making your own corn tortillas does not reduce the carb content to the required level. This is why your best bet is to find a healthier substitute.
  • Corn tortillas are not the only popular snack to avoid on keto. Buttered popcornpita chips, and pretzels are among the non-keto food items to exclude from your diet.

Too Low in Fats

  • The whole idea of a keto diet is to consume and burn more fat than carbs. With corn tortillas, you only get 2.85g of fat as opposed to its high carb content.
  • In keto, weight loss is synonymous with burning clean fuel, which, in this case, would be the fats consumed. Corn tortillas are too low in fats and overall promote weight gain.
