Is Buttermilk Keto?

No, buttermilk is not keto-friendly. Buttermilk is what happens when milk is churned and separated into a solid and a liquid. The solid part turns into butter, and the liquid is called buttermilk.

It is often used in baking, cooking, and in some cultures, a beverage on its own. This tangy beverage is generally considered healthy, but why isn’t it keto?

Not Keto-Friendly

  • Buttermilk is not keto-friendly because it is high in carbs and low in healthy fats.
  • This is the complete opposite of what you want in keto because the body will burn carbs before it gets to the fat.
  • The ideal macronutrient distribution in keto is 5–10% carbs, 25% protein, and 70% fat.

High in Net Carbs

  • Buttermilk contains 4.81g of carbohydrates per serving.
  • In addition, store-bought buttermilk also contains sweeteners and preservatives.
  • In order to maintain a state of ketosis, carbohydrate consumption must be kept below 50g daily.

Low in Healthy Fats

  • Buttermilk contains very little fat – only about 1.08g per serving.
  • For a keto diet, fat consumption should be a priority.
  • Make sure you’re getting enough good fats in your diet. Stock up on fish, legumes, and cheese.

Without Additives

  • If you want to use buttermilk in your meals, it’s better to make a fresh batch at home.
  • This way, you can be sure that you’re in control of what goes in it and that it’s free from any preservatives or sweeteners.
