Is Buckwheat Flour Keto-Friendly?

No, buckwheat flour is too high in net carbohydrates to suit the ketogenic diet. Consuming buckwheat flour will prevent you from reaching ketosis and burning stubborn fat. Most flour is high in carbs, but you can eat some varieties in moderation.

Not Keto-Friendly

  • Buckwheat flour can be a more nutritious alternative to regular flour, but it is not keto-friendly.
  • Like brown rice flour, chickpea flour, and rice flour, the macronutrients in buckwheat flour do not match the keto diet’s requirements. It has protein and fiber, but unfortunately, it is high in carbs and low in fats.
  • Your body cannot start burning fat if you do not deplete your glycogen stores by cutting down on carbs.

Low in Fat

  • You need to include lots of fat in your diet, but buckwheat flour has only 3.1 grams per 100-gram serving. It’s not enough to give your body the high-quality fuel it needs to function properly during the ketosis phase.

High in Carbs

  • 100 grams of buckwheat flour has 60.6 grams of net carbohydrates.
  • You should consume no more than 25 grams of net carbohydrates per day to trigger and maintain the ketosis state.
  • In general, flour and flour-based products like bread and pasta are off-limits on keto. Their carb count is too high, making it impossible to stay in ketosis.
  • There are some kinds of flour you can eat now and then. For example, almond flour has fewer carbs, but your intake needs careful monitoring. The same rule applies to coconut flour, which has similar amounts of carbs.

Natural

  • Buckwheat flour is ground from buckwheat – a natural, flowering plant. It is cultivated for its seeds, which make a highly nutritious whole grain.
  • Some people consider buckwheat a superfood. It’s packed with protein, dietary fiber, and B vitamins to deliver multiple health benefits.
