Is Balsamic Vinegar Keto?

No, balsamic vinegar is not keto-friendly.

This vinegar is not only high in terms of the glycemic index but contains too many carbohydrates and sugars to be eaten on a keto diet. After looking at the nutritional value of this vinegar, with 17 grams of carbohydrates and 15 grams of sugars, people following a ketogenic diet should not consume it.

Not Keto-Friendly

  • Balsamic vinegar contains elements that cannot be consumed on the high-protein, standard, or targeted ketogenic diets
  • The carbs found inside balsamic vinegar stem from grapes used in production, and though some are lost in fermentation, they still exist – very similar to wine!
  • And, as the effectiveness of a keto diet relies on putting your body into a metabolic state of ketosis – or fat burning – you cannot eat foods that contain high carbohydrates or sugars, which are two factors that pull you out of ketosis.
  • Balsamic vinegar contains ingredients that your body processes as carbohydrates and sugars.
  • So, because remaining carbohydrate-free for keto is important, balsamic vinegar is not keto-friendly due to its nutritional counts.

Clean Label but Low in Fats

  • Though balsamic vinegar is not keto, it is a generally “clean label” product.
  • This means that most balsamic vinegar is made with minimal ingredients: primarily grapes, wine vinegar, caramel color, and a possible preservative.
  • Balsamic vinegar is low in fats, as can be seen on the nutritional table.
