Is Aspartame Keto-Friendly?

Aspartame may be classified as lazy keto. While the low-carb part may be enticing, aspartame consumption should be kept at a minimum.

  • Aspartame is a substance commonly found in diet sodas and sugarless treats. It won’t affect blood sugar levels and, therefore, will help keep the body in a state of ketosis.
  • However, it is important to note that low carb doesn’t always translate to healthy. Aspartame may be used in keto to add some sweetness to the mix but should be consumed with caution.

Lazy Keto

  • Not everyone has the time or the patience to count every ounce of calories in the food they eat daily. This is why lazy keto has slowly been gaining ground because it only requires you to count your carbohydrate intake.
  • Lazy keto restricts your carbs down to 20–50 grams per day.
  • Aspartame sweeteners can certainly fit into the picture, as they typically contain less than 1 gram of carbs per packet.  However, it is not good for one’s health.
  • Eat more vegetables, nuts, seeds, and red meat on keto to reap all the benefits.

Made Artificially

  • Aspartame is a combination of two proteins – phenylalanine and aspartic acid. Although phenylalanine is found in most foods and aspartic acid is produced by the body, aspartame itself does not occur naturally.
  • People diagnosed with phenylketonuria and schizophrenia should avoid aspartame-containing foods in their diet. Phenylketonuria is a condition wherein the body cannot process phenylalanine – a component of aspartame.
  • Aspartame may also worsen the side effects of common schizophrenia medications.
  • Aspartame has been deemed safe to eat by the FDA However, it does not contain any vitamins or minerals that can contribute to a healthy diet.
  • The lack of nutritional value tells us that consumption of aspartame-containing food should be kept at a minimum.
