Are Apples Keto-Friendly?
Apples are unfortunately not keto-friendly due to their high percentage of net carbs. This fruit is also low in fats, which doesn’t make it suitable for a ketogenic eating plan.
Not Keto-Friendly
- Apples have 11.4g of net carbs per 100g serving.
- This high carbonated content makes it unsuitable for a ketogenic diet since it will take up most of your daily carb intake.
- Consuming too many carbs in your diet can knock your body out of ketosis. It will start to burn those carbohydrates for fuel instead of fat storage.
- Stick to other fruits, like strawberries and raspberries, that contain very minimal carbohydrates.
Low in Fats
- A ketogenic diet requires plenty of healthy fats to give your body energy. Apples only contain 0.17g of fat per serving, which isn’t enough for a keto diet.
- You should get around 60–70% of your daily calories from healthy fats. Other foods like avocados, coconut, salmon, walnuts, and eggs can fuel your body.
- One serving of apple only contains 52 calories, which might seem great for someone losing weight. However, you should find other low-calorie fruits that suit keto.
- Apples might be healthy and part of your regular diet, but they could easily disrupt your ketogenic diet. The same rule applies to unsweetened applesauce.
- Too little fat makes you feel weak, and too many carbs can produce extra glucose in your body. It’s better to avoid this fruit completely from your diet.
Nutritious and Natural
- Apples derive from the trees in wild apple forests. This fruit is known to be healthy and full of nutrition like vitamin C, antioxidants, and potassium. People often try to incorporate this fruit into their daily or low-calorie diet.
- This fruit might be natural and nutritious, but it won’t benefit your weight loss during a ketogenic diet. You can find similar minerals and vitamins in blueberries.
- If you still want to eat fruit on the keto diet, you can have watermelon, lemons, tomatoes, raspberries, strawberries, rhubarb, and peaches.
- Just mix these fruits with smoothies or have them on their own with a delicious breakfast or a dessert.
