Is Agave Keto?

Unfortunately, agave is not keto-friendly. Like many other sweeteners (honey, molasses, etc), it has too many net carbs that will raise your blood glucose and insulin levels, kicking you out of ketosis. It also contains additives that will not benefit your diet.

Not Keto-Friendly

  • Agave is a high-glycemic sweetener you should avoid on the keto diet. It is very high in carbohydrates and may cause blood sugar spikes.
  • Low-carb foods are vital for keto because they help you stay in ketosis.
  • Another reason agave is a bad match for keto is that it has zero fats. The whole concept of the keto diet is a macros ratio high in fats and low in carbs.

High in Net Carbs

  • There are just too many carbs in agave. A 100g serving has over 70g!
  • Even a small amount of agave (a 10g serving has just over 7g of carbs) will supply your body with too many carbs.
  • For weight loss success with keto, you must limit your carb intake to under 50g per day. Doing so will allow your body to facilitate ketosis, and you can reap the perks of this metabolic transformation.

Low in Healthy Fats

  • The basic keto principles are high-fat, moderate-protein, and low-carb. Fat makes up 70–80% of your daily caloric intake. You must focus on good fats for keto to give your body clean fuel to burn.
  • Low-fat and zero-fat-containing foods are not beneficial for keto.

Contains Additives

  • Although a natural sweetener with some healthful properties, agave has high levels of fructose – a type of sugar.
  • Agave is also associated with an increased risk of type 2 diabetes, obesity, and other chronic disorders.
  • To stay on track with your keto diet, choose keto-friendly alternative sweeteners. Examples include stevia and monk fruit.
