Your fasting diet may require you not to eat anything during specific periods. It’s less clear, however, what you can drink during intermittent fasting. This article discusses whether you can consume MiO while fasting, how and when you should take it, and whether it has any apparent health benefits.

Does mio break a fast

Intermittent fasting is the most popular healthy lifestyle practice today. A few reasons people do it include enhanced brain health, weight loss, metabolic health, and gut rest.

However, maintaining an intermittent fasting routine is difficult, especially when beginning. You may experience hunger, fatigue, and an increase in sugar cravings.

Water is an essential component during fasting periods. However, not everyone likes plain water. People may look for alternative ways to flavor plain water with zero-calorie beverages like apple cider vinegar or liquid water enhancer like MiO to increase their water intake.

But what’s the impact of MiO on your fasting if you choose to use it? Does MiO break the fast? To get the answers to your questions and much more, keep reading this article, as our specialist explains everything you need to know regarding the MiO liquid water enhancer.

Does MiO Break a Fast?

A fast is defined by periods of consuming no calories; for that reason, MiO does not break a fast, considering it has no calories and carbs. However, the exact answer may also vary depending on your fasting reasons and the type of intermittent fasting you practice.

If you practice intermittent fasting for ketosis or weight loss, MiO will not break your fast. It contains no calories or sugar to trigger insulin, which could lead to the breaking of a fast.

However, if your goal is to reap all the benefits of intermittent fasting, MiO might break your fast. It can inactivate and interrupt some perks of intermittent fasting, such as improved gut flora and autophagy, hence not getting the most out of your fast.

What Is MiO?

MiO is a liquid water enhancer. It has no calories; thus, you can consume it without worrying about weight gain. MiO has various flavors with four product line versions, giving you a chance to turn your water to any taste. The four product lines are MiO Sports (Electrolytes), MiO Original, MiO Energy, and MiO Vitamins.

The critical components in all four varieties of MiO products are water, sodium citrate, citric acid, gum arabic, and sucralose. With that said, depending on your fasting reasons, squeeze a few drops of MiO (about a half teaspoonful) in water during the fast. Excessive consumption of MiO could be harmful.

It contains artificial sweeteners like sucralose, which may prompt the LG tongue receptors to initiate an insulin-induced response due to their sweet taste, resulting in more cravings and hunger pangs. Also, the sweetener acesulfame-potassium found in some kinds of MiO can affect the gut microbiota, which may lead to weight gain.

Are MiO Drops Healthy?

There isn’t a definitive answer to this question as research is mixed on whether they’re healthy.

Some say that MiO drops are safe for those struggling to drink enough water throughout the day. This water enhancer doesn’t have calories or carbs to induce an insulin response, which would break your fast and limit the benefits of your fasting.

Furthermore, the FDA has declared sucralose, Ace-K, and stevia leaf extract, sweeteners used in MiO liquid enhancers, to be generally considered safe (GRAS). However, research into their safety is still ongoing.

On the other hand, MiO has a few adverse effects, most of which are connected to its artificial sweeteners. If you overuse this water enhancer, expect such adverse effects as nausea, diarrhea, bloating, or stomach pain.

Artificial sweeteners and diet sodas also have adverse effects on your health. For instance, some research suggests that consuming drinks and liquid water enhancers with artificial sweeteners and diet soda may raise your risk of stroke, coronary heart disease, and high blood pressure.

Do MiO Drops Raise Blood Sugar?

MiO drops do not raise blood sugar. However, they contain artificial sweeteners that may affect it. Studies show that sucralose and acesulfame can alter blood sugar and insulin levels.

Manufacturers recommend consulting a doctor before using this liquid water enhancer if you have diabetes or are having trouble controlling your blood glucose. In short, be cautious when using MiO to control blood glucose.

What Sweeteners Are Used in MiO?

Each MiO product line comes in various flavors. Most products have acesulfame potassium (Ace-K) and sucralose as artificial sweeteners.

Acesulfame potassium (Ace-K) and sucralose add sweetness to your water without adding calories. However, sucralose is 385–650 times sweeter than natural sugar. Therefore, when using MiO during your fasting period, use a small amount to sweeten your drink.

Stevia leaf extract sweetener is the only natural sweetener in MiO drink, specifically, two of the MiO Vitamins flavors. Stevia leaf extract is unlikely to trigger insulin response or limit your fasting benefits, making MiO good for clean and dirty intermittent fasting.

A Word From Our Nutritionist

Those doing intermittent fasting may already be wondering: does the MiO liquid water enhancer break a fast? Well, the answer is – it varies.

Fasts are defined differently by different people. Some believe a fast is broken when calories are consumed, while others believe a fast is broken only when ketosis is broken.

Calories are not recommended when following the intermittent fasting diet pattern unless you are following dirty fasting. Instead, intermittent fasting restricts your eating to create a calorie deficit and ketosis. For this reason, MiO does not break a fast because it contains zero calories.

Also, MiO may not be the best choice if you follow intermittent dieting for its numerous benefits, such as improved autophagy, improved gut health, reduced inflammation, and improved insulin sensitivity. This is because MiO consumption during a fast will disrupt these benefits.

If losing weight is your goal, you can consume MiO instead of other beverages like apple cider vinegar and still remain in a ketosis state to increase the burning of extra stored body fat. Try adding a squeeze of MiO to your plain water and see if it improves your fluid intake.

Furthermore, avoid diet soda; despite having fewer calories, it has no health perks.

Conclusion

Whether MiO breaks a fast depends on your reasons for fasting and the type of fasting you are practicing. You shouldn’t add MiO drops to your water if you are clean fasting.

MiO a is a concentrated liquid water enhancer. It may help you consume more water without adding sugars or calories during your fasting hours. If you are not sure of what you can drink during fasting hours, read this article to learn more.
